Learn about our Business

Retail and Commercial Business

Caltex, the retail brand of Chevron Corporation, was among the first foreign oil companies to set up retail outlets in China. The first Caltex service station started operations in Shenzhen in 1982, Caltex has grown a network of retail outlets throughout Guangdong operated by its subsidiary Caltex South China Investments Limited. Caltex South China joint ventures have 40 outlets in Guangdong in various cities of the Pearl River Delta. Most of the outlets provide 24-hour service and are equipped with convenience stores to meet the needs of customers. These joint ventures also market other fuel products, such as diesel, fuel oil, lubricants and liquefied petroleum gas, to industrial consumers in this market where quality fuel and services are in growing demand.

Caltex Lubricants

Marketed in China under the Caltex brand name, Chevron's lubricants business has grown rapidly in the last decade and has a nationwide presence. Today, it has sales and marketing, manufacturing and distribution operations throughout the country, including the major cities of Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Tianjin and Hong Kong.

Products are supplied by the company's wholly owned and joint-venture blending plants in Tianjin and Shanghai, respectively. The wholly owned plant in Tianjin came on stream in late 1999 and is one of the country's most advanced lubricants blending facilities. The plant is accredited with ISO 9001 and ISO 140001 quality and environmental management systems.

Caltex Lubricants' achievements to date can be attributed to its dedicated and professional sales and support services, superior and "fit-for-market" products, as well as a strong and extensive distribution network. Additionally, relentless marketing efforts enable it to gain strong brand recognition and broad market coverage in both the automotive and industrial sectors. The Caltex Havoline and Delo range of gasoline and diesel engine oils and Extended Life Coolants are among the best-selling engine oils and specialty products and are widely used as initial fill and after-market products by automotive and original equipment manufacturers.

COGEL Shantou LPG Terminal

Caltex Ocean Gas && Energy Ltd (COGEL) is a joint-venture company established in 1996 by Caltex China Limited and Shantou Ocean Enterprise (Group) Petroleum and Petrochemical Company Ltd. The joint-venture company has successfully built a world-class liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) terminal at Shantou in Guangdong Province. The terminal began operation in February 2000.

Shantou LPG Terminal is China's first underground LPG terminal and its second-largest LPG terminal, with huge storage capacity. The facility includes two 100,000-cubic meter capacity underground storage caverns, as well as three berths for loading and unloading LPG. The biggest berth has a capacity of 50,000 deadweight tons. High-quality LPG is distributed to customers by tank trucks and liquefied petroleum gas vessels.

The operation strengthens Chevron's presence in South China and reinforces the company's position as a leading LPG provider in that region.

Asphalt Supplies

Caltex has been operating in China's asphalt market since 1994 and began its operation of the terminal in Lanshan, Rizhao City, Shandong Province, under the joint venture company name Rizhao Lanshan Caltex Asphalt Co., Ltd. (RLCA) in May 1995. The company has built four asphalt storage tanks with a total capacity of 12,000 metric tons. To ensure product quality and accuracy in product delivery, a state-of-the-art digital control system was installed at the terminal to monitor the asphalt storage temperature, stock level and loading quantity. There are three production lines to process a daily average of 600 tons of barreled asphalt daily.

The RLCA terminal was designed to handle some 200,000 metric tons per year and is equipped with eight railway tank car loading arms and five lorry loading arms. It currently handles approximately 100,000 to 150,000 metric tons year by, mainly serving the northern China market. RLCA supplies asphalt to customers nationwide in China by means of trucks, railway tank cars and drums. The world-class products are widely used in highway and road construction work in many provinces including Shandong, Yunnan, Guangdong, Sizhuan, Shanxi, Shanxi, Henan, Hebei, Hunan, Hubei, Zhejiang, Jiangxi and Jiangsu. Caltex-brand asphalt has a very strong market presence.

To further serve the China market, RLCA is engaged in a cooperative arrangement with TOA ROAD, a well recognized Japan based construction company, to develop and produce polymer modified asphalt and other asphalt based products.
