Chevron in Saudi Arabia and the Partitioned Neutral Zone

Chevron has been a major player in developing the petroleum and human resources of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia since it made the first commercial oil discovery in the Kingdom in the 1930s.

Chevron is the only international oil company with a continuous upstream presence in the area since the 1930s. With partners, it formed the predecessor company to todays Saudi Aramco, and went on to discover and develop such fields as Ghawar, still the world's largest oil field. Texaco, a Chevron legacy company, was the first major oil company to enter a downstream alliance with the Kingdom.

As you can tell, weve achieved a number of firsts in the past, and anticipate similar results in the future. We counted on cutting-edge technology to get there, but these accomplishments couldnt have been reached without people like you; people with the drive and potential to fulfill the most extraordinary missions. Learn about our business

Chevron pursues a wide range of petroleum and petroleum-related interests with Saudi Arabia, working closely with Saudi Aramco and private firms. Special emphasis is given to projects that provide high-level employment opportunities, professional training and exposure to new technology.

There are different components to our business:

Upstream Exploration and Production

In the onshore Partitioned Neutral Zone between Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, Saudi Arabian Chevron (SAC) partners through Joint Operations with Kuwait Gulf Oil Company to operate four producing fields: Wafra, South Umm Gudair, South Fuwaris, and Humma. A main gathering center is located at Wafra with many sub-centers throughout the three main fields. Cumulative production reached three billion barrels in 2004. SAC also independently operates a storage and marine export facility at Mina Saud (Al-Zour) on the coast of the PNZ, where its head office and residential camp are also located.

Downstream Marketing and Retail

In 2000, its first year of operation, the Saudi Chevron Phillips Co. petrochemical plant at Al-Jubail achieved design capacity, producing 1.1 billion pounds of benzene and 525 million pounds of cyclohexane. The plant, the Kingdoms first privately financed basic petrochemical enterprise, uses ChevronPhillips proprietary Aromax process to convert naphtha feedstock. In 2007, construction progressed on an integrated, world-scale styrene facility, along with the expansion of an existing, adjacently located aromatics plant. The $1.3 billion project is scheduled for start-up in late 2007.
