Chevron is accepting online applications for the Petroleum Geochemist Specialist position through May 17, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. (CST).  

Petroleum geochemists in the Hydrocarbon Charge and Geochemistry Chapter work with earth scientists and petroleum engineers in Chevron Technical Center and in Business Units to assess petroleum source rock presence, quality and quantity, and to characterize and predict hydrocarbon fluid phase and composition through integrated geochemical data analysis and interpretation at regional, prospect and field scales. Members of the Hydrocarbon Charge and Geochemistry Chapter are closely involved in Exploration business processes and in unconventional resource development. Work products are often used by Play Risk Workshops, Exploration Review Team and BU exploration and development teams to evaluate resource potential, to high grade exploration portfolio and to optimize field development plans.

This position is for an earth scientist with strong geochemistry background and demonstrated data integration and analytical skills. Prior experiences with petroleum geochemistry are required. Prior experience with R&D work and teaching and mentoring is a plus.

Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

  • The position requires proven ability to work closely with other technical experts to provide input to optimize exploration and reservoir management decision.
  • Successful candidate of this position will be required to deliver on-demand service to Chevron business units, including petroleum source rock evaluation and hydrocarbon fluid assessment at regional and prospect scales, and geochemistry support for well operations during exploration, development and production phases. The responsibilities also include analyzing and presenting results from geochemical perspective for play risk and exploration reviews, participating in data-room visits, assisting with the evaluation of farm-in and farm-out opportunities, and representing Chevron as a subject matter expert in industry meetings.
  • The role also requires participation in strategic research and development projects to advance technology in petroleum geochemistry, mentoring early career earth scientists and teaching petroleum geochemistry schools upon request.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum Master's degree in geochemistry or geosciences.
  • Prior industrial work experience in source rock evaluation and hydrocarbon fluid analysis in multiple petroleum provinces worldwide.
  • Analytical skills required include strong geological and organic chemistry background, deep understanding of petroleum source rock development in sedimentary basins, familiar with oil and gas generation, migration and alteration processes and common oil and gas data types (bulk compositional data, biomarker and isotopic compositional data), proficient in quality checking and interpreting industry standard geochemical data (e.g., TOC and Rock-Eval data, vitrinite reflectance data, gas chromatography, gas-chromatography-mass spectroscopy and carbon isotope data), skilled in integrating geochemical data with other geological and engineering data for holistic petroleum source rock evaluation and hydrocarbon fluid property characterization and prediction.
  • Capable of working with complex datasets in compressed timelines and delivering creative solutions.
  • Cross-functional collaborative skills with seismic interpretation, stratigraphy, basin modeling, structure, seal and reservoir quality specialists are essential.

  • Position may require travel to SBU or their-party locations to fulfill job responsibilities, consultation, and technical work.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. degree in geochemistry, course work of organic chemistry.
  • Prior experience with laboratory analyses of rock, oil and gas samples would be beneficial.
  • Prior work experience with basin modeling and petroleum system analysis is a plus.
