The Welcome Back Returnship Program:

Life happens, and sometimes we must make tough decisions. Many talented individuals consciously step away from their careers for reasons that may include starting or raising a family, caring for a family member, military service, or something else.  Chevron’s Welcome Back Program is designed to support and develop experienced professionals when they make that next decision: to re-enter the workforce following a career hiatus.

Welcome Back is a 12-week program with integrated learning that includes supervisor and mentor support, experiential learning, career support, and formal training as needed.  Successful participants may be offered full-time employment at the end of their Returnship.

Chevron offers a 9/80 work schedule and a hybrid work model; specific days in the office are flexible based on job requirements.

Chevron Financial Auditor

Chevron’s Corporate Audit organization helps Chevron's businesses and functions enhance and protect value by providing risk-based and objective assurance, advice, and insight.  Performs audit testing and analysis for effectiveness of operating and financial process controls across a wide variety of audit subjects.  Applies digital skills to synthesize and analyze large data sets to distill key findings.  The role requires innovative and critical thinking in leveraging technology, project management skills, and recommending risk mitigation solutions.  After first year, will be expected to lead audits of moderate complexity and mentor assisting auditors in audit tools and techniques.  Performs advance planning for audits and consultations, identifying risks and resource needs.  Facilitates meetings with diverse clients, including senior leaders, to explain the audit process, resolve complex audit issues, and reach agreement with findings presented in the audit report.

Responsibilities for this this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Evaluates effectiveness and efficiency of internal control, risk management, and governance processes across wide variety of business units, functions, and operations
  • Demonstrates knowledge of business objectives, accounting and finance processes, inherent risks, and relevant controls
  • Ability to apply knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and auditing standards
  • Effectively reveals financial and compliance exposures and highlights effective mitigation options
  • Leverages risk assessment techniques such as impact and likelihood to differentiate risk levels
  • Skilled at applying digital skills in analysis of large data sets to distill and communicate key findings
  • Skilled at using data visualization tools (e.g. Power BI) to illustrate key findings and risks
  • Facilitates meetings with diverse clients, including senior leaders, to explain the audit process, resolve complex audit issues, and confirm understanding of findings presented in the audit report
  • Collaborates on audit team activities and exercises critical thinking and sound judgment in recommending scope changes to optimize value of each engagement
  • Skilled at detecting and addressing potentially systemic issues and drawing simple conclusions and logical recommendations from complex or sensitive issues
  • With experience, regularly performs Engagement Lead role on complex/sensitive audits with significant operations, compliance, and financial exposures
  • With experience, performs Engagement Manager role on audits of moderate complexity
  • Ability to engage with clients at all levels to establish trust, confidence in the team’s business knowledge and value of audit team recommendations

Key Considerations:

  • Positions are located in Houston, TX or at Chevron’s headquarters in San Ramon, CA
  • Hybrid work model: two days in-office, three days remote. 9/80 work schedule supported
  • Flexibility to travel domestically for on-site audit engagements
  • Interest in future Chevron assignments as part of the broader Finance Function and/or embedded positions within Upstream, Midstream, Downstream and other support functions

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently on a career break of 18 months or longer
  • Bachelor's or higher degree in Accounting, Finance or Business
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in Finance/Accounting/Audit

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Corporate Finance/Accounting, Public Accounting, Energy Industry or Advisory experience
  • Experience with internal controls practices and compliance topics such as Sarbanes-Oxley testing
  • Experience in leveraging emerging technologies to enhance business processes
  • CPA and/or MBA considered a plus

Preferred Skills:

  • Analytical - Critical thinker with ability to quickly assimilate new information, understand key business processes, apply a risk-based mindset and approach, and develop and execute a thoughtful audit response.  Strong understanding and application of risk and controls.  Ability to efficiently mine and analyze large data sets to understand business and value drivers.  Experienced at designing quantitative and qualitative analysis to draw conclusive and compelling insights
  • Communication - Strong written and verbal communication skills - able to document work logically and produce formal reporting of results.  Provide clear, persuasive recommendations to internal and external stakeholders.  Able to synthesize complex topics and present in concise fashion targeted to the desired audience
  • Leadership/Initiative - Effective at distilling organizational objectives into specific strategies or plans to achieve desired results. Demonstrated ability to articulate goals, champion issues and effectively engage, mobilize and influence organizations or teams.  Demonstrated persistence in driving progress on key initiatives and consistently seeking to broaden the scope of role.  Proactively drives continuous improvement and simplification. Able to effectively manage multiple tasks to completion under tight deadlines
  • Teamwork/Interpersonal - Ability to work collaboratively in a multi-discipline team environment, across geographic boundaries, and with a wide range of stakeholders.  Must be able to develop and maintain effective rapport and relationships with peers, other departments, and functions, and with relevant external partners and organizations. Track record of effectively delivering and receiving feedback
