About the position:
This position is for an early to mid-career petroleum geochemist to work with earth scientists and petroleum engineers in Chevron Technical Center and in Business Units to assess petroleum source rock presence, quality and quantity, and to characterize and predict hydrocarbon fluid phase and composition through integrated geochemical data analysis and interpretation. Work products will be used to support exploration and asset development decisions and to optimize field development plans.
Key responsibilities:
The position will be responsible for executing established geochemistry data analysis and interpretation workflows to evaluate source rock presence, quality and quantity, and to characterize and prediction hydrocarbon fluid phase and composition for exploration, appraisal and development projects.
The role requires delivering on-demand geochemistry service to Chevron business units at regional and prospect scale, and to support well operations during exploration and development phases.
The role requires interaction with internal and external analytical laboratories, searching and compiling geochemistry data, interpreting and integrating the data with other subsurface datasets, and presenting quality results for project reviews.
The role may require participation in strategic research and technology development projects and teaching petroleum geochemistry courses upon request.
The role may also require traveling to Chevron business units or third-party locations to fulfill job responsibilities, consultation, and technical work.
The successful candidate shall be able to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams under compressed timelines and deliver creative solutions to multiple projects simultaneously.
Required Qualifications:
Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Geochemistry or relevant Geology sub-disciplines with a focus on geochemistry.
Strong background in Sedimentology and Organic Chemistry.
Good understanding of the factors controlling petroleum source rock development in sedimentary basins. Familiar with oil and gas generation, migration and alternation processes and analysis tools.
Capable of quality checking, analyzing and interpreting industry standard geochemistry data in at least two of the three areas: 1) source rock evaluation (TOC, Rock-Eval and vitrinite reflectance data etc.); 2) gas data analysis (compositional and isotopic data for both hydrocarbon and non-hydrocarbon gases); 3) oil geochemistry data (e.g., API gravity, GOR, sulfur content, biomarkers, and oil isotopic compositional data).
Proven experience in integrating geochemical data with other geological and engineering data (e.g., petrophysical data, seismic data, PVT data etc.) for holistic petroleum source rock evaluation and hydrocarbon fluid property characterization and prediction.
Demonstrated capability to learn fast and to apply learnings effectively with independent and analytical thinking.
Proven capability to collaborate in cross-functional teams, and to deliver results under compressed timeline and working on multiple projects simultaneously.
Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. degree in Geochemistry.
Prior work experiences with petroleum geology and field/well operations.
Hands-on experiences with laboratory analytical work on gas-chromatography (GC) and gas-chromatography and mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) are beneficial but not required.
Prior work experience with basin modeling and petroleum system analysis is a plus.
