About the position
The Process Design Engineer – Specialty Operations Infrastructure will be a member of the Process Engineering team at Chevron ENGINE. This role performs hydraulic modeling, transient analysis, and water hammer studies to support Chevron’s Specialty Operations assets and infrastructure projects (brownfield and greenfield), with an emphasis on safe, reliable, and operable process designs. The position supports pipeline integrity, operational reliability, regulatory compliance, project development and asset optimization by developing hydraulic models, evaluating transient scenarios, assessing surge risks, and recommending practical mitigation solutions. The role also encompasses pressure relief system calculations, overpressure protection, and related process safety support.
Engineers will work closely with Operations, Pipeline Integrity, Projects/Project Engineering, Process Engineering, Control Systems, Mechanical Engineering, Maintenance, and other discipline engineers to support facility designs, modifications, and ongoing operational needs. The Process Design Engineer (Pipeline Hydraulics) will interface directly with Chevron assets and project teams to provide technical ownership, evaluation support, and remote engineering assistance across the Specialty Operations Infrastructure portfolio.
Chevron ENGINE supports global operations, and work hours are aligned to business needs. Standard working hours are 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM or 1:30 PM to 10:30 PM, Monday to Friday. These may evolve based on operational or business requirements.
Key responsibilities
- Perform Hydraulic and Transient Analysis – perform transient hydraulic, surge and water hammer analysis for liquid and multiphase pipeline systems. Conduct studies for pipeline startups, shutdowns, valve operations, emergency events, relief events and abnormal conditions. Evaluate transient pressure profiles and identify locations susceptible to overpressure, slack conditions, vapor collapse or excessive negative pressure.
- System Modeling and Data Management – gather, validate and maintain hydraulic model inputs. Develop baseline operating configurations and model various operating scenarios, calibrate and validate models against operating data to ensure accuracy and reliability, maintain current models for operating assets and future projects.
- Develop, review, and maintain hydraulic modeling documentation including relief valve information, equipment datasheets, design basis narratives, control narratives, and other technical documentation as required.
- Surge Mitigation and Risk Reduction – identify potential surge and water hammer hazards, evaluate and recommend mitigation measures. Provide engineering recommendations that improve safety, reliability and operability.
- Regulatory and Compliance Support – ensure compliance with applicable regulations and standards including pipeline pressure management requirements.
- Reporting and Technical Documentation – Develop comprehensive engineering reports documenting assumptions, configurations, scenarios, surge analysis results and mitigation recommendations. Prepare technical presentations and communicate findings to all parties (engineering, operations, leadership, and project stakeholders).
- Ensure designs comply with Chevron engineering standards, applicable industry codes, and regulatory requirements.
- Support development of process design criteria and standard methodologies for Specialty Operations Infrastructure; support Management of Change (MOC) activities with appropriate technical documentation and engineering justification.
Preferred Qualifications
- 5+ years of experience in hydraulic modelling, pipeline engineering, process engineering, or related field supporting crude oil, refined products, NGL, water and multiphase pipeline systems
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering (or similar) from an appropriately accredited university.
- Experience performing transient hydraulic, surge or water hammer analysis.
- Knowledge of ASME B31.4, ASME 31.8, API RP 1130, and 49 CFR Parts 192 and 195
- Proficiency with process modeling tools such as SPS (Synergi Pipeline Systems), OLGA, and/or industry-recognized transient calculation methods.
- Familiarity with ASME, API, and other applicable industry codes and standards related to pressure relief and process design.
- Knowledge of core process design deliverables including process design basis, process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and heat and material balances.
- Knowledge of Chevron or similar corporate engineering standards and management of change (MOC) processes.
- Experience supporting HAZOP, LOPA, MOC, and incident investigation activities.
- Experience with Python, VBA, SQL, or other data analytics tools
- Ability to communicate effectively with operations, project teams, and multiple engineering disciplines.
- Familiarity with data analysis and visualization tools such as PI, SEEQ, or similar platforms.

Required Qualifications
- 5–10 years of process engineering and process design experience within renewable fuels, petroleum refining, specialty chemicals, or related process industries.
- Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, or equivalent, from an appropriately accredited university.
- Proficiency with process simulation tools such as Pro II and/or Aspen HYSYS.
- Proficiency with iPRSM PSV/relief system calculations & database.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting biodiesel, renewable diesel, or other alternative or low carbon fuels facilities.
- Experience with batch, semi batch, and continuous process units involving reaction, separation, and treating systems.
- Strong knowledge of process design practices, deliverables, and project execution phases.
- Familiarity with ASME, API, and applicable industry codes and standards.
- Working knowledge of HAZOP facilitation, process safety analysis, and root cause analysis.
- Experience supporting brownfield projects and operating facilities.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively across functional teams and with asset stakeholders.
- Experience and working knowledge with relief system calculations and standards, i.e. API 520, API 521, ASME Sec VIII, Chevron FRS-DU-5056, and FRS-DU-5057.
