Provides technical guidance on a wide range of personnel safety issues including the identification of risks, safeguards, and associated assurance activities. Manages the execution of all facets of Control of Work, including Managing Safe Work (MSW), Contractor Health Environment and Safety Management (CHESM), Motor Vehicle Safety (MVS), and other workforce safety programs. Provides workforce safety guidance and support to operations. Teams with technical safety specialists to develop Safety in Design for new and modified facilities.

About the position:

The Safety Specialist – Maintenance is responsible for ensuring that work planning for maintenance activities ‘builds in’ compliance with Heatlh, Safety, and Environment (HSE) regulations, Control of Work standards and includes identification of HSE safeguards. This role is required to understand and align with the Front-End Loading and Planning to Execution models, to provide early HSE input during long range and detailed planning phases of maintenance activities. The role will work within cross functional teams within ENGINE and with business unit personnel.

This position will report to the Workforce Safety Team Lead within the HSE function of the Chevron ENGINE in Bengaluru, India.

Key responsibilities:

  • Ensure that all maintenance activities comply with HSE related regulatory requirements, company standards and procedures, and other applicable safety regulations. Stay updated on changes in safety standards and implement necessary updates to maintenance work planning practices.

  • Provide HSE input into maintenance work packs.Develop, update, and communicate safety and health aspects and safeguards specific to each workpack to maintenance crews and contractors.

  • Utilize IT tools for analysis of safety and health data associated with maintenance activities and trends to identify hazards, root causes, and areas of improvement to provide actionable insights to enhance workplace safety.

  • Facilitate hazard analyses (HAZIDs) for maintenance activities as required, identifying potential hazards and collaborating with stakeholders to recommend control measures to mitigate risks.

  • Support efforts to prevent incidents with a focus on eliminating significant incidents and fatalities through providing guidance to field HSE, V&V Coaches and contractor crews on implementation and execution of safeguards for maintenance scopes.

  • Develop safety training and/or communication briefings for maintenance staff and contractors, ensuring all employees are informed about proper safety procedures, personal protective equipment (PPE) use, and emergency protocols relevant to each scope of work.

  • Support incident investigation and reporting of any incidents, or near-misses related to maintenance activities, identify root causes, and assist in the development and implementation of corrective actions.

  • Schedule and conduct audits of the permit-to-work (electronic Control of Work) system after work completion, especially for high-risk maintenance tasks such as confined space entry, lockout/tagout (LOTO), and hot work, and identify trends.

  • In conjunction with the Maintenance Planners, perform post job debriefs.

  • Collaborate with the emergency response team to develop and update emergency procedures relevant to maintenance activities, ensuring the team is prepared for potential incidents.

  • Ensure that contractor work crews performing maintenance work comply with the company’s safety policies and procedures, by routine audit of contractor training records (MyPass), COEM field feedback data, COEM assurance data and eCoW completion records.

  • Maintain detailed safety records, including training logs, inspection reports, incident reports, and corrective actions in the correct System of record (e.g., eCOEM, II&R etc.).

  • Identify opportunities to improve maintenance safety processes, reduce workplace hazards, and promote a proactive safety culture.

  • In conjunction with the Data Reporting team, develop routine presentations for asset leadership on maintenance activity HSE performance.


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Engineering, or a related field

  • Experience in safety management, preferably in maintenance or industrial environments

  • In-depth knowledge of Human and Organizational Performance principles and their application in an industrial environment

  • In-depth knowledge of regulatory regulations, particularly related to maintenance activities, including isolation of hazardous energy, hot work, confined space entry, and hazard communication

  • Experience conducting safety training and implementing safety management systems

  • Qualifications and/or experience in safety management system auditing

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to identify and mitigate risks

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and safety management software


Chevron ENGINE supports global operations, supporting business requirements across the world. Accordingly, the work hours for employees will be aligned to support business requirements. The standard work week will be Monday to Friday. Working hours are 8:00am to 5:00pm or 1.30pm to 10.30pm.
