The Senior Process Engineer serves as a refinery process technical expert and a local source of domain knowledge, stewarding more complex process initiatives and advancing near to mid-term business objectives for the El Segundo Refinery run-it PE team. This position is also relied upon for technical expertise to support refinery operations, process optimization, and mentoring early-career process engineers. This position reports to a Process Engineering Team Lead in the El Segundo Refinery. The Senior Process Engineer should develop expertise in multiple technologies to maximize value to the business and maximize ability to lead cross-division technical efforts.

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Provide process troubleshooting support, make technical recommendations, answer technical inquiries, improve process engineering tools, and develop process engineering procedures.
  • Provide technical mentoring to unit process engineers and serve as a subject matter expert to develop early-career engineers.
  • Steward complex process initiatives that advance prompt to mid-term business objectives for the refinery.
  • Identify and communicate economic value-driven opportunities for improvement; apply economic metrics (NPV, DPI, ROR, ROCE, VOI) and cost/value tradeoffs to prioritize work and support decision-making.
  • Help identify gaps between current performance and best-in-class and recommend opportunities for improvement.
  • Advise process engineers on conducting test runs to optimize process variables and evaluate plant performance.
  • Maintain awareness of and champion implementation of new technologies that improve the viability, profitability, and reliability of the unit or asset.
  • Provide technical recommendations and engineering support during planned unit turnarounds; work may entail work at heights, confined space entry, and off-hours engineering support.
  • Provide process engineering input to management of change (MOC), operating procedures, and process safety information accuracy.
  • Contribute to (and may author) engineering guidelines and best practices.
  • Individual schedule may require flexibility to respond to refinery upsets during off hours.
  • Lead investigations or cross-refinery troubleshooting initiatives.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.
  • Minimum of 10 years in Oil & Gas downstream refining industry. 
  • Technically competent: demonstrated practical application of the chemical engineering fundamentals of mass transfer/distillation, heat transfer, fluid dynamics, process control, and kinetics.
  • Experience participating in studies such as PHA, IPR/ROI, LOPA, etc.
  • Possesses strong communication and coaching skills.
  • Proactive and delivers results.
  • Demonstrated ability to: work with little to no supervision, influence the decision of a team through dialogue and presentation of data, reach consensus when necessary to achieve a larger goal, meet deadlines for critical efforts/initiatives, and troubleshoot large/complex unit operational issues.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Supervisory experience.
  • Oils Planning or Refinery Economics experience.
  • PSM/Reliability experience.
  • Experience leading turnarounds.
  • SME on at least one PHA.
  • Multi-site experience.
  • Proficient in the use of data visualization tools, process simulation software and hydraulics (PI, Seeq, PROII, etc.).
  • Experience leading or participating in an incident investigation using TapRoot® or WhyTree methodologies.
  • Participation in industry networks or committees (e.g., AFPM).

Please note that the compensation and benefits listed below are only applicable to successful candidates who are hired onto local United States payroll.

  • The anticipated salary range for this position is $158,600 – $274,800.
