Oil, Products & Gas (“OPG”) Law has a team of Legal Analysts (paralegals) who provide transactional and other legal and commercial support for Chevron’s global businesses, including Downstream, Chemicals and Midstream (“DCM”) businesses. This position provides legal and patent-related support for OPG business groups and reports to the Manager, Legal Services, DCM, OPG Law.
This position requires a highly skilled Legal Analyst who is knowledgeable with the life-cycle process of filing, prosecuting and maintaining patents, applicable patent office rules and regulations, systems for managing patent-related data and deadlines, and exhibits strong leadership and influencing skills.
Responsibilities:
This position will perform paralegal tasks both independently and under the guidance and direction of attorneys and patent agents, including:
Prepare and assist with the preparation of patent application-related documentation, including original applications, transmittals, templates for responses, declarations, assignments, information disclosure statements, application data sheets, etc.
File patent-related documents with patent offices and attend to payment of associated fees.
Act as a subject matter expert in providing guidance on patent docketing, workflows, database inquiries and troubleshooting of various patenting activities with third party vendor.
Serve as a subject matter expert by working directly with third party vendor to resolve database issues (e.g., identification, research, and resolution), enhancements, updates, reporting and testing.
Communicate office actions, filings, grants, and other patent-related updates to clients.
Engage directly with outside counsel in connection with retention, changes in laws and practices, rate changes, and invoice issues.
Collaborate with patent practitioners to manage dockets of US and non-US patent matters by reviewing correspondence, updating dockets, setting priorities, and ensuring that actions are timely completed.
Draft, proofread, and update presentations, reports, spreadsheets, and documentation for patent practitioners.
Maintain, update, and correct patent-related data in Law Function systems and applications and generate reports from applications.
Monitor and maintain credit balances in USPTO and WIPO Deposit Accounts, reconcile and replenish same.
Maintain a current understanding of patent office operations, including rules and filing requirements, prosecution flows, and knowledge of patent office rules and practices.
Provide problem-solving research and feedback relating to new and/or revised patent office procedures, internal workflow efficiency, law and/or rule changes, etc.
Develop and provide training on patent filing processes / systems and best practices.
Educate others on the invention submission process and create matters in Law Function applications for newly submitted disclosures.
Perform legal research related to patents and other matters.
Assist with various administrative duties relating to both US and non-US patent filing and prosecution.
Coordinate notarization and legalization of patent-related documents.
Retrieve records from public and private databases worldwide.
Provide backup support to members of the Intellectual Property Law Group, as needed in times of heavy demands and/or absence of other team members.
Required Qualifications:
Minimum of two years of experience as a patent paralegal handling a variety of patent-related matters, including preparing and assisting with patent applications, filing, office actions, managing dockets, etc.
Ability to effectively analyze and communicate patent-related issues and collaborate across broad functional and organizational lines (e.g., business partners, subject matter experts, attorneys and/or patent practitioners).
Strong organizational, analytical, proofreading, editing and research skills.
Ability to exercise good judgment and maintain-high quality performance with competing deadlines and priorities in a fast-paced work environment.
Strong communication (both oral and written), collaboration and interpersonal skills.
Ability to give effective feedback (both positive and constructive) and receive feedback (both positive and constructive) and act upon it.
Self-starter who is adept at working in a team environment and partnering with management, business partners, in-house counsel, outside counsel and staff.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and think independently on how to solve problems and offer solutions.

Demonstrated initiative, ownership and accountability.
Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of tools and the ability to quickly learn new tools.
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree.
Paralegal certificate from an ABA-approved program.
Advanced skillset in Microsoft Office tools (i.e., Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint, Forms, OneNote, Sway and Visio).
Experience with Anaqua, TeamConnect, Collaborati, or iManage.
