Tax Counsel / Senior Tax Counsel

The person serving in the Tax Counsel / Senior Tax Counsel position will provide tax planning advice and support on a wide variety of U.S. state and local tax matters affecting Chevron’s businesses and will report to a General Manager in Chevron’s State Tax Legal group. 

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

• Providing tax planning advice and support for various of Chevron’s businesses, with a primary focus on state and local taxation.
• Conduct in-depth tax research and analysis in support of the company´s state and local tax positions.
• Advising management and relevant stakeholders of the state and local tax implications of proposed business transactions and activities.
• Managing state and local tax controversies including filing formal protests, representing the company in administrative hearings, and negotiating settlements.
• Monitoring state and local legislative and regulatory developments that impact Chevron’s businesses.  

An extensive understanding of state and local tax laws is a necessity, as are excellent verbal and written communication skills, tax research skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with peers and varied groups of stakeholders. 

Knowledge and experience with tax and commercial oil and gas operations, marketing and trading activities, “new” energies are desired attributes as is knowledge and experience with tax accounting for direct and indirect taxes.  

Required Qualifications

• Juris doctorate
• Minimum of 10 years of U.S. state and local tax planning experience
• Bar admission 

Preferred Qualifications

• LL.M. or CPA

Relocation Options: 

Relocation may be considered within Chevron parameters. 

International Considerations: 

Expatriate assignments will not be considered.
