The Material Engineer position provides Materials and Corrosion Engineering services and support.  The Material Engineer’s primary duties are to develop and communicate expertise on materials selection, damage mechanism reviews/identification, corrosion monitoring and control, failure analysis, interpretation of inspection data, critical reliability variables, welding and fabrication troubleshooting, mechanical design review, and equipment repair.

This role supports development/execution of fixed equipment asset strategies, participation in the Management of Change (MOC) process and provides support for Refinery shutdown planning/execution.

Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

  • Provides consultation on materials selection, corrosion monitoring and control, remaining life assessment, and repair strategies. Customers include inspectors, technical support, operations, management.
  • Participates in the planning and execution of work plans for plant turnarounds and capital projects.
  • Facilitate Damage Mechanism Reviews as part of the PHA process.
  • Act as technical resource in the development, implementation, and sustainment of integrity operating windows as needed.
  • Stewards corporate programs such as Wet H2S, Sulfidation, HTHA, and others. Ensure programs are accurate, up-to-date, and incorporated into the appropriate refinery equipment inspection plans.
  • Mentors inspectors, engineers, and others in materials technologies such as materials selection, welding and fabrication, and corrosion control.
  • Review weld procedures for materials requirements and appropriate application. Provides direction on hydrogen bake-out, welding, post weld heat treatment of refinery equipment.
  • Reviews Positive Materials Identification testing results to determine acceptability of the material for its intended use when composition elements are outside specification ranges.
  • Works with other Materials Engineers in Chevron System to develop common tools, processes, and decision-making criteria. Also works with larger Corporate and industry community for training, obtaining technical information needed for consultation, and staying current with the state-of-the-art knowledge that may have application at the Refinery site.
  • Review, and revise/author as needed, Mechanical Integrity standards and documents used within the Refinery/Manufacturing (including Refinery Instructions, FEI work guidelines, and other RAGAGEP) relating to materials and corrosion
  • Provides materials engineering support to fixed equipment asset strategies, which includes sustaining the living program for piping and developing asset strategies for pressure vessels utilizing API 581 RBI. Provides updates to both when process conditions dictate or inspection related updates are needed.
  • Act as a technical resource in analysis of data, damage mechanisms, and equipment/piping reliability plans (asset strategies). Assist as needed to analyze data, calculate corrosion rates, assess risk, and predict response period for fixed equipment.
  • Performs failure analysis to determine root cause and develop long-term solutions to prevent repeat failures. Sends material to TP&E and consults, as necessary.
  • Supports Fitness for Service Assessments.
  • Acts as technical resource to assist in training personnel on industry and company codes as well as damage mechanisms and the associated inspection techniques for them.
  • This position may require responding to emergency calls and some overtime/weekend coverage, as business needs demand, occasionally on an unplanned basis.
  • Occasional travel is required, roughly 5%, depending on assigned projects and experience level.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree, OR experience in Refining/Fixed Equipment with a fundamental understanding of corrosion mechanisms, inspection practices and techniques, material properties, and repair techniques as specified in the selection criteria.
  • Ability to work in and around operating facilities, with occasional climbing and internal equipment access. Ability to pass a fitness-for-duty test.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Materials Engineering
  • Certifications in API 571, 510/570, 579 or 580
